C# and in tune

I finally managed to down-tune my guitar to C and C#. This means I can now play the album “Shape of Despair – Angels of Distress.” A huge thanks to Chris (Father Death) for tabbing them out on Doomish.com.

After Ramadan Eid, on Red’s advice, I bought new strings. I installed them but struggled with tuning and, lacking patience, I left the guitar alone. In October, I moved back to my family’s house, and it wasn’t until this recent Eid holiday that I found the time and mindset to properly engage with my guitar again. With some soul searching and music, I managed to tune the strings. They sound barely fine in C, but it’s enough for me to enjoy playing “Shape of Despair.”

It’s been about a year since I last played, and my skills were rusty. Within minutes, my fingers were cut, and I struggled to remember even the simplest tracks that I used to play with ease.

Starting like a baby taking his first steps, I eased into it with simpler pieces:

  • Anathema’s cover of Pink Floyd’s “One of the Few”
  • Empyrium’s “Der Weiher”
  • Tiamat’s “A Deeper Kind of Slumber”

With my fingers already taking a beating from the low strings, I switched to power riffs. I played some old Sepultura, some Draconian, and then Hypocrisy came on. I was so captivated by the music that I put the guitar down, grabbed my headset, and just listened. By around 8 AM, I turned off my iPod and went to sleep.

All in all, it was a good session. It’s always refreshing to vent and blow off some steam in the way you enjoy most. Let’s see what the coming days bring.
